Aches and Pains and my bl**dy Shoulders

Redish pain

Pain and tension anywhere in the body is uncomfortable and debilitating. There are many causes of pain – injury, accident, strain, sprain; but I also believe pain can have a metaphysical cause as well. By metaphysical I mean a mind-body relationship which I will talk about in this blog.

When we think about pain and illness, most of us are primarily concerned with the condition of our physical body and fixing that.  So, what do we do?

We go to the doctor, get medicines like pain killers or anti-inflammatory creams or even steroids and hope for the best. Great, that works for a time and then something else happens (which might be related to the medicine you took, or not), but things generally are not getting any better.

746151C5-4D2A-46B1-85D0-EDEA3803B2B1_4_5005_c

How about thinking about things differently?

I believe origins of pain, illness and the process of healing extend far beyond the confines of what we perceive as our physical body. This is where our thoughts-mind come in.

The way we identify ourselves, our life experiences and beliefs, every word, every thought, every feeling, every emotion is constantly creating chemical changes via our central nervous system flowing into our tissues, our cells, our organs and this is recorded in how we physically feel.

0F94DA7A-87C3-423B-AFBE-0AA4B935EA19

This flow is what I call energy, others call it life force, or prana, or chi. Whatever you want to call it, when this energy is flowing beautifully then all is good, however, we live in a world with stresses and bumps in the road to navigate through, and so our flow or energy can become compromised and sometimes even gets blocked.

The result – pain, tension or illness.

Our bodies don’t get sick or have aches and pains without a reason. It’s not something that just happens. Stress is usually the biggest culprit with a lot of us not even knowing we are stressed or feeling run down. We actually think of it as normal (“everyone is stressed aren’t they?”) until the effects of it catches up with us in some form or other and we break down with illness or pain.

But surely we can deal with the stress and just let it go or process it?

Under normal circumstances, our bodies are able to process and let go of a certain amount of stress, or emotions, or traumas, just like it is able to digest and get rid of a certain amount of junky food. But as we know, if we continue eating too much junky food, our bodies can’t keep up with processing it all, so the remainder of it gets sent to other parts of the body for storage – in other words it stores it as FAT.

It is the same with unprocessed stress, energy, emotions, and traumas. The body stores these excesses as energy blockages in parts of the body.

We can only process, or let go, or burn off so much.

What happens to the rest?

This is what I call an energy malfunction or even a BLOCK. And normally we make the conscious decision not to take action and address the blockage. Or, we deny, or cut off from an emotion or feeling thinking if we suppress it, it will disappear. It gets pushed down and stored in some part of your body, and, as this builds up inside you year after year, it starts to manifest itself in different ways: you start noticing that you can’t sleep, you get agitated more easily, quick tempered, shoulder tightness, headaches, neck problems, breathing problems, digestive issues, food sensitivities and other illnesses. We may ask the Doctor to give us a tablet for the symptoms but we are not dealing with the causes.

However, what if we were to take action through the mind body connection?

Could this work?

How do we do this?

I believe it’s about turning inward and honestly looking at yourself. It’s about reflecting on the story of your life. It’s about Self Awareness – not just awareness of you but also the way people and the world around you impacts on you. Once you learn to become aware, your world opens a little wider. You start to see connections between the physical and spiritual world and discover why things happen to us.

Since becoming an Intuitive Therapist I have delved deeper into myself and my awareness has grown. This takes time and practise, but it has been well worth it.

You are probably wondering when is she going to get to the shoulder part?

Well I’m nearly there. I just wanted to give you a brief description of how I think when it comes to us and how we work, and how healing the energy body works. This is how I work with everything relating to our bodies so I will refer to this information often in other blogs to come.

What is awareness when it comes to pain and tension?

33FF69E2-25D4-4BD6-BC14-700B19C49819_4_5005_c

Awareness is listening to your body and letting it tell you where it needs help. Our bodies have an inner wisdom that tells us when to take a break and rest, when and what to eat, when to sleep and so on. If we pay attention to this inner wisdom, we can learn to become more aware of ourselves, more in touch with life. However, we have to be ready to hear the information it tells us. A lot of us fear what will be said, so we become defensive and make up excuses as to why we have an ailment and blame others or a situation for it. “I can’t help it, it’s not my fault”, “I’m just blocked”, “it’s just old age”, “these things happen”.  AHH, not really. This to me is resistance.  I’ve been very resistant in my life so I recognise it. I come from a background of resistance and excuses. I thought it was normal. I thought it made me strong, in control. One thing for sure was, it didn’t benefit my body which brings me to my shoulders.

459193CB-199D-4F53-9FA5-0E671D188E05_4_5005_c

I have had shoulder tension and pain on and off for many years. When I was singing it was mainly my right shoulder. Since I gave that up, the right shoulder has calmed down a bit. Now I have become aware of my left shoulder problems and it fascinates me, just like every client that I see with pain or illness fascinates me.

I have been to Osteopaths, Chiropractors, had Acupuncture, Massage and all the rest. I’ve taken all sorts of herbal medicines and supplements. I’ve been to the gym and done exercises and stretching. The list goes on. Did any of this help? Kind off, but only in a superficial way.

Whilst my shoulder problems are nowhere near what they used to be I still feel there is something not right, a block, a lack of freedom and even pain every now and then, so I am now dealing with them through Energy Release, which has been very interesting and I am putting into practise what I do with my clients.

9AFD4538-7104-434F-AED0-B5F1D4DBFD72_4_5005_c

When I work with any client, I work with their unique energy field. This energy field surrounds and protects us from lots of things such as bacteria, germs, environmental issues. This energy field mirrors our physical energy system which I believe is made up of energy centres. I like the word Chakras to describe them but you can call them whatever you want.

Our chakras circulate life force, chi, prana around the body and the mind. In these energy centres there are rivers or channels that flow from one chakra to another carrying prana, life force, chi throughout the whole body. This is your flow that I talked about earlier. We are just energy. Chakras are not solid. You can’t physically see them (even though some people can) or hold them, but you can feel them. We each feel them differently. I feel a buzz, a hum, an aliveness. I also feel a numbness or non-movement, a nothing in some areas as well.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine the channels are called Meridians, Ayurvedic Medicine has a similar system called Nadis. It so happens that meridians run close to nerves and arteries, even tendons in the body, so is there a connection? I like to think so.

I will refer to chakras and meridians as I talk about pain and illness in my blogs, so you will get used to my terminology.

My Shoulder tension

Like I said, the tension and pain in my shoulders is nowhere as bad as it used to be, however, by working through energy release on them I am finally fixing the issues.

Here is what I have discovered. Maybe this information might help you.

F8431DE4-5A67-46C1-AFE2-F6E415F57555

The energies of the solar plexus chakra and the heart chakra can manifest in the shoulders. Makes sense doesn’t it? These 2 muscles are in the vicinity of the shoulders. In my case, these are the areas that have definitely contributed to the stiffness and pain in my shoulders.

The solar plexus energy area is the centre of our will. It is our learning area. It is where we start to make decisions about what we are going to do in life, which direction we will take, it’s where we make gut decisions. The solar plexus reacts to our social life. On a physical level this area reacts to situations we are going through at home, at work, school, social events. It is the area where we feel self-esteem. If we have uncomfortable situations happening at home, at work etc, we feel it in the solar plexus area. From this centre our energy is concerned with whether we are liked or disliked.

The heart chakra is obvious, it’s to do with love. The giving and receiving of it to be precise. When these energies are flowing beautifully you will have confidence, feel strong, have powerful feelings of achievement. You can forgive and love.

Sounds great doesn’t it? Well that’s what I am working towards, but first I need to deal with the Resistance/Blocks.

584E830C-B56B-435A-BF93-2E27DD2EA88D

My shoulders were the worst was when I was a singer. You could say that the physicality of singing could have put a strain on them, but I know plenty of singers who don’t have shoulder problems. So isn’t it interesting that as soon as I made the decision to give up, my shoulder pain subsided.

Stiffness in the shoulder area can reveal that you are going in the wrong direction in life, that you are doing something in life that isn’t serving your Highest Purpose. In my case that was for sure. I had to let go of my identity as a singer, which wasn’t very easy, and, let go of certain ways of thinking, which I am still trying to do.

Shoulder pain is quite complicated. There are six different meridians or channels moving through this area. All of these contain quite a mixture of emotional, mental and behaviour energies which show themselves as different types of pain. In my case, this was mainly tightness and heaviness. Also a feeling of stagnation in the shoulders. That buzz that I mentioned earlier wasn’t buzzing. Stagnated energy becomes a protective barrier mainly from hurtful feelings. Again, this has to do with the heart.

086266EB-7823-4058-959B-1A3368E40F0A_4_5005_c

Rotator cuff tightness has a lot to do with holding hurt feelings as well, and not forgiving.

Shoulder pain can also be caused by being set in your ways. Resisting new possibilities. Tensing the upper body is normal when we resist, it’s a way of maintaining control. Wanting control of things, people, events, causes tightness in the body especially the shoulders, arms and hands. Negative self-talk also causes tightness in the body especially the shoulders.

So that’s a description of the realisations I have had of myself. I could go on but I need to give a bit of background.

8DE00CE4-0EBF-4C12-B02D-B3E20BBEDDFC

When I was singing, the main area of tension and pain for me was in the Trapezius area.

This area has an acupressure point relating to the gallbladder GB21. It is the point on the gallbladder meridian that carries the energy of our belief in our own limitations. As a result of this, the energy of frustration can arise from here. This point can become very sensitive and very painful when touched or massaged. Do you feel frustrated by not having the confidence to ask for something like a pay rise, or more attention, acknowledgment, love?

When clients refer to neck and shoulder pain, a lot of the time they point to this area.

In my case, I always believed I wasn’t good enough to justify asking for a better fee for singing, or even being ready to go for an audition or putting my price up for teaching singing lessons.  I felt I wasn’t qualified enough, good enough. Imposter syndrome?? And, I didn’t enjoy the study part, the learning part associated with the job.

When I gave up singing and started on the therapeutic route these feelings would sometimes well up again, but never as bad. These feelings are actually quite normal. That’s why we study and learn, to feel comfortable through our knowledge. But something is different now. I am much more confident being a therapist than being a singer. I believe in myself. I enjoy the study, the learning. Am I finally serving my Highest Purpose?

As a result, my trapezius muscles are softening. If they do get a bit tight, I am aware and I can work through what the issue might be related to, so the tightness goes very quickly.

C8F2A43C-57D0-43C3-8D69-7A1D22EA515C_4_5005_c

Another interesting area that I am working on is under the shoulder blade of my left shoulder. There is a particular trigger point that gets painful and then radiates out into my arm.

In my case, and in most clients I see, this point relates to the heart chakra. It is directly behind the heart. Arms are the energetic extensions of the heart. If your heart is weak or closed or resisting then your arms will feel the same and vice versa. For the heart to be free, the arms need to be free, so I will talk about them together.

In my case it’s my resistance to show love and particularly in my early life, being open to receiving it. I have become aware that I get this pain when I shut off to some people and some situations. I shut off and hold my ability to love and receive love mainly because of previous belief systems and hurts.

While I have been trying to release this area I have been having a few dreams about my father. He was a stubborn man. He couldn’t really do emotions. Well, actually, he could do anger very well. He was always frustrated. Everything was a drama with him. And of course my mum, myself and my brother never did anything right. I think that’s where I learnt how to shut off to people and also not believing in myself. You know what it’s like, if you get criticised enough you start to believe it. I thought that when my dad died, I had accepted him for who he was and that would be the end of it, but I hadn’t really forgiven him. Maybe I didn’t think it was necessary because he was dead. Sometimes I wish he was around so that we could have conversations that I would approach differently now about our relationship, which may help with forgiveness (or because of his stubbornness may not).  Shutting off from someone, especially our parents or a spouse etc, doesn’t fix anything as I have found out.  All this does is block our hearts from opening. Blaming your parents/spouse means not forgiving them. By not forgiving them we are not loving them.  How can your heart be truly open?

A1CA1EBA-A686-49C0-80C0-C32408172595_1_201_a

Opening my heart is definitely work in progress for me. Being generous in spirit and open with love. It’s not something I was brought up to do. My dad never trusted anybody, he was suspicious of everyone. I had this belief system for a very long time.  No wonder I had resistance in my shoulders. Another interesting thing to mention while I think of it is, the shoulders can also store energies of your parents. If your parents were unhappy together or if either or both of them experienced little or no love in their lives, sometimes a second generation copy of these energies is passed into you at the time of conception and it is stored in the upper arms and shoulders.  Now that’s a bit out there – but have a think about it.

470F69B1-E8ED-43BE-AD4D-F33D8991A22B

An emotion I have felt while working on energy release in my shoulders is sadness. I stifled sadness for a long time. I never liked it. I never liked the feeling. I always equated it to a negative emotion. But now I believe that every emotion is positive….positive if you process it rather than stifle it. If we let ourselves feel, we have many emotions in a day. Sadness energy can be found close to the heart, mainly on the breast bone. I have been trying to open and release that area and as a result I have been releasing sadness. Not really attached to an event, just sadness. Interesting isn’t it?

Healing by energy release can happen through many healing forms. It could be through myofascial release, therapeutic massage, pressure points, Amnanda Process, Shiatsu, the list goes on. When you work with a great practitioner that you trust, guidance and support will always be there. Opening the heart will help the channels in your shoulders and upper arms open as well. Sometimes opening these areas will release intense discomfort and trigger other areas of discomfort in the body. In my case that has been in the deltoid muscles, the rotator cuff and under my left shoulder blade. But it’s all good because I am releasing the blocked energy and feeling so much better.

How do I release??

Everybody is unique. Unique in pain and illness and unique in healing.

My job as an Intuitive Therapist is to work with my clients’ uniqueness, so every treatment is different. I work with you to find your bespoke solution. Therefore, what I do for myself may not be for everybody. You need to find what is right for you.

My main form of healing myself was initially through the Amnanda Process and now I use Meditation, or Prayer, or Mindfulness, whatever you want to call it.

D6DA2979-364A-46A5-A08F-99BFA3274968

By meditating I am able to become more aware. Aware of my energy flow, and as a result, aware of other people’s energy and the energy that surrounds us all.

During my meditations I can concentrate on releasing resistance, stiffness, dispersing pain, and helping my flow. I do this through breath and visualisation. This has taken a lot of practise but the results have been well worth it. I use this method with my clients as well.

On a physical level a very enjoyable session I go to is with my Shiatsu practitioner. I love Shiatsu. It’s a physical therapy and the underlying principle is pressure. Different stretching techniques are part of the treatment and I find this very beneficial for me. As my practitioner stretches my body he will also apply pressure to certain points (meridians) and I get feedback from my body. My awareness picks up lack of flow and through my breath I can try to work through it. I like this therapy because I am not reneging my responsibility for my own healing by wanting him to fix me.  We have an understanding, we work together. From my shiatsu session I am then able to work on the physical blocks I have felt, and then I meditate and work on energy release myself.

That’s how I work with my clients when we have a treatment, building their awareness and working with them towards their unique self-healing journey.

Before I end, I would just like to say that all of this information is totally my opinion. If you have found it interesting then great. If you haven’t that’s fine.

In all of this we need to find our own truth and what works for us.

Enjoy finding yours.

Until next time.

Body Image

E7DF09B5-DCC9-4869-BE9B-36A2ED1792F4

I want to talk about body image.

What do we see in the mirror when we look at ourselves.

What have we been told to see?  What is our expectation?

Not long ago I posted a full length picture of myself on Instagram. It was quite a big deal for me. I’m sure a lot of you can relate. Ok, I did it as part of body positivity day so I used that as an excuse. But it still was a big deal. After posting the picture, I wondered if this meant I am getting somewhere with my body image? To tell you the truth, generally I am quite contented with me now, except when Im feeling a bit off. It has taken a lot of work but it feels good. I feel like I am in control at last.  I’ve stopped believing that a life goal should be to change your body to be “better looking”. Better for who?

So why are we judged by how we look? Why do we judge ourselves by how we look?

Why do we judge? That’s the real question.

59C2CB4B-5DFB-45D3-A8A2-25FF64F017A2_4_5005_c

I felt prompted to write this blog about body image because over the last couple of weeks there were a few instances where body image has come up and reminded me of its dominance in our society, and how it has affected me.

I have noticed however that since I have come off the weight band wagon I don’t get as many people wanting to talk to me about it. I’ve also changed my line of work so maybe it isn’t expected as much anymore. Well, whatever it is, it’s a welcome relief.

So back to the couple of instances.

Sitting next to me at a dinner was a very beautiful woman who had a body on her like a super model. She didn’t have any food in front of her and I asked “Aren’t you hungry? This meal is actually quite nice”. She said she had to lose a very specific amount of weight because she didn’t like the way she looked. And the specific amount was quite a lot. At first I thought she was joking so I laughed. However she wasn’t.

I then thought, wow, no matter what we look like, it’s sometimes still never enough.

I proceeded to eat the dinner.

Then, another lady who I know very well said to me, I need to talk to you about what diet I can do to lose all the weight I have put on this summer. I don’t know what was sadder, the fact that she felt she needed to lose weight or the fact that I am the diet guru.

Someone also made a comment to me the other day about weight. They were being complementary by saying “there are people who are really fat and there are people like you who carry weight but feel healthy”. Hmmm thanks 😳

Why is our body image such an issue? Why do people care?

I usually find that people who are critical or make comments about other people’s weight have an issue with their own. That’s bizarre isn’t it? You would think that if you are a bit chunky you would have empathy and acceptance for someone else in the same boat. But no, it’s the first thing that is seen and commented on. People describe other people as, “the one that is overweight” and some people feel they have the right to voice their opinions, without any awareness of anyone else. I had a client who said I was getting chunky, mind you this same client was horrified that I wasn’t a vegetarian because I was a therapist.

B2D94CB3-C621-4D57-A3E9-8D650B46D7EB

Oh well it takes all sorts. Fortunately by that stage of my life I didn’t care. If it had been 5 years earlier I would have been scouring the internet for the next diet.

Its also important to remember the other side of the scale when it comes to body image.

Weight is a very touchy subject no matter who you are. I have had a few clients who have body issues because they feel underweight and are embarrassed. One lady didn’t want me to touch her because of that and kept apologising for being thin.

So why have I brought this up and why is this subject important to me?

Because for the majority of my years it has been a very stressful and depressing subject. I think about the amount of time and money I have spent researching the latest diet, diet supplement, detox, pull me in knickers and everything else that goes with it just to get the perfect body that we are told we are meant to have, and it gives me a headache.

It’s disturbing to see people believe all the hype around diets and perfect bodies and how it will make you happy. Happy????? All it ever made me was stress out. Stress out about what to eat, stress out about what not to eat, stress out about gaining a lb, stress out about not losing enough lbs. Stress out about the judgment.

So, how do we change? Do you want to change?

9D90B589-05A6-4BF5-AC70-50037FC7F5E6

Well, for me it was turning 50. I had also been through the Amnanda Process. I changed my life in a lot of ways, but the weight thing was still getting the better of me. So, I said “that’s it”, no more diets, no more worrying what other people thought, no more stress.

It hasn’t been smooth sailing. There have been a few times where a diet has crossed my mind. There always seems to be something thrown in front of me especially when I’m on social media. But fortunately I haven’t acted on it. It’s about breaking a habit, you could even call it an addiction, which is hard to do.

The main thing that has kept me going is my strong feeling of being unique. I have led a contradictory life. There have been certain things in which I will not conform to at all and then there are things like body image where I got sucked right in. Well, now that ain’t happening anymore. The more I practise this the better I will get. I am now trusting myself and taking responsibility. I’m not stupid, I know if I overindulge in food and drink there is a consequence, but its nice to give myself permission to have the choice.

We are all unique and beautiful in many ways.

So, If this blog has made you question about how you describe someone or yourself, and maybe made you think twice about judging what you see then Im very happy.

Does anyone want any diet books??????????????  😜

Is the Heat Wave impacting you?

Boris-Johnson-Britain’s-Prime-Minister-Brits-Googling-UK-Heatwave-2019

Is this extraordinary heat affecting you?

It’s affecting me, and a lot of it is my fault.

I’ll explain why, and maybe this might help you as well.

Last week I was on holiday in Portugal enjoying the sunny days as you would while on holiday. We would go out somewhere in the morning before the heat started, then in the afternoon I would either sit in the shade or take an afternoon nap. And then I would venture out again in the late afternoon or at dinner time. I was drinking a lot of water and having cool showers before going to bed and eating cooling foods. Bliss.

So what has happened to my common sense since I have returned home????

We are not used to hot temperatures here in the UK. I’m not used to hot temperatures here in the UK. I’m always complaining about the weather not being hot enough here. You see I was born in Australia and our summers were hot and long. I think I have a romantic memory of Australian long hot summers without actually remembering the down sides.

I have been in the UK for over 20 years and have forgotten what those long hot summers were like and, I have acclimatised to the UK weather.

This is what I have forgotten over the last couple of days. I think I got over excited and I have spent too long in the sun.

Well, now I have been suffering.

fullsizeoutput_943

Yesterday and the day before I spent a lot of time out in the garden. I have been wearing a singlet top and shorts and a cap. I felt great. I don’t remember drinking a lot of water though because I was way too busy gardening. We had a nice bottle of Rosé sitting in the garden last night and I had a light dinner but then started snacking on crisps.

Just before I went to bed I started to feel quite odd and a bit aggressive. I was having a conversation with my husband and I my voice rose a few times. When he pointed this out to me I said I was just passionate. But in retrospect maybe this was the first sign of my Pitta inbalance.

I didn’t have a cool shower before going to bed last night which was a bad move. My system was warming up fast.

Everything was ok until about 3am. According to the Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, chi, prana, blood becomes most active in the gallbladder and liver from about 11pm to 3am. My liver was working overtime. It was heating up and so was I. At one point I had no more bed clothes to strip off and I was burning up. I probably should have had a cool shower then and there but I felt too awful. My kind husband got me a cold flannel and I placed it on my liver side which helped a bit, until that heated up as well. I probably drank 1.5 litres of water and I was still thirsty. This lasted for about an hour and then the headache started.

It is a headache that is immediately recognised by me. I get this headache a few days before my period and sometimes when I ovulate. It usually lasts for 24 hours and it always starts at night. When I checked my diary this morning I noticed that I am due for my period in the next few days so that’s the reason for the hormonal headache. No wonder my system was over heating, my hormones were at it as well.

I moved into the spare room so that my poor hubby could sleep and tried to relax. I did some breathing and visualisation which helped and eventually I fell asleep.

So, what have I learnt and how am I remedying the situation today?

Firstly, Im not that young Australian spring chicken who used to love being in the sun anymore.

Secondly, practise what you preach to your clients about imbalance.

Today I am enjoying a lot of water and in particular this wonderful tea

02026-1_800x

Amaiva Pitta Tea

I am eating cooling fruit, Ive just had lovely nectarines and I will have watermelon.

Tonight will be veg of some sort. No meat – meat heats the system

No booze – alcohol heats the system.

I have spent most of the day in my lovely therapy room in the basement of my home which is very cool. I will venture out into the garden later when the sun is milder, and I will have a cool shower before going to bed tonight.

I hope this has been of some help to you.

Its all about awareness, take note of what your body is telling you before its too late.

Enjoy the weather.

Cold Weather and Kidney Energy

kidneys

Although we had record warm temperatures last week in the UK, the cold weather still hasn’t finished and in this blog I want to talk about a particular problem I see during the cold Winter months: Low Kidney Energy

It is something I suffer from and I also see it a lot in clients this time of year.

What is Kidney Energy?

The traditional medicines of most cultures talk about vital energy flowing around the body. In Chinese medicine for example it is called Chi, in Ayurveda medicine it is called Prana.  A healthy body has a good energy flow through all the major organs and systems with no major dips or low points. When I examine a client, I am able to feel this flow of energy and detect imbalances.  And it is in the kidneys where during the colder months, I frequently feel a dip or low energy in both myself and in my clients.

So why do we get Low Kidney Energy?

Firstly, Kidney Energy does deplete as we get older but lifestyle factors play an important part.  Stress, Overwork, Chronic illness can all be contributing factors. But Low Kidney Energy can be caused by something as simple as not drinking enough water.

Believe it or not the seasons also impact on our body’s flow and especially the cold weather on our kidney energy.

What are the Symptoms of Low Kidney Energy?

Personally, one of the signs that things are not working properly, is feeling cold right through me. People with Low Kidney Energy generally hate the Winter and really feel the cold nearly all the time, even inside with the heating on. In particular, feeling cold in the lower half of your body, lower back, knees, ankles. Low Kidney Energy can lead to low back pain and pains in the legs.

I know you will probably say, “But it’s Winter, of course you are cold” however, there is cold and there is cold all the time. If you suffer from this then you will know what I mean. It’s the cold right through to the bones cold. Cold through to the core of your body. You might have experienced this type of cold when you had flu or have been over exhausted and felt as though you had a chill.

If you feel like this then maybe you need to think about your Kidney Energy.

When my Kidney energy is good, I might be cold on my extremities, but I don’t feel cold in my core.

The next thing that I might feel is thirsty. Dehydration is a major cause of Low Kidney Energy and during Winter we tend not to drink as much as we would in the warmer months.

I do make a point of drinking water. I find if I don’t drink enough I become dehydrated. This results in my body becoming too acidic and then other problems arise. Normally, the kidneys filter out various salts and minerals and regulates your body’s PH. However, dehydration puts a lot of pressure on the Kidneys and the bladder.

woman-with-lower-back-pain

When my Kidney Energy gets low I also get the ache. It is a very deep dull ache in the right side of my back just under the ribcage. Then I know that my poor old kidneys have had enough, are overworked and are low on Energy. That is just my experience, however I do have people complaining of back ache in these areas as well.

Other physical symptoms clients experience include:

Constant Tiredness.

Dizziness, Vertigo

Poor bladder control, or frequent urination (often a sign of overworked kidneys and dehydration).

Puffiness and Water Retention, especially around the ankles and feet.

Craving salty foods

Dry weak hair

Moaning, Complaining, Fear.

How to Improve Your Kidney Energy

There are a number of things you can do to increase kidney energy.

The first thing to do is look at your lifestyle:

  • Are you burning the candle at both ends?
  • Too many late nights, lack of or even too much exercise?
  • Eating on the run / doing everything on the run?

All of these factors can weaken kidney energy if endured for too long. So rest and relaxation of body and mind is crucial to help strengthen the kidneys.

Keep your Kidney area warm

As part of this I would highly recommend a regular warm Salt bath during the Winter months. Not only is this fantastic for destressing and relaxing, Salt is also the flavour we crave when we have Low Kidney Energy. Dead Sea Salts or Himalayan Salts are highly beneficial.  They contain numerous minerals including Potassium and Magnesium which are very often deficient in today’s diet. Magnesium is natures tranquilliser and Potassium helps regulate the fluid balance in the body. Not only will you feel restored and regenerated after one of these baths, you will also feel relaxed.

Two products I recommend are Primordial Sea Bath Salts

basisches-badesalz-basenbad-urmeer56fd0400d1283_800xTHERAPIE-HIMALAYAN-DETOX-SALTS---LG_grande

Therapie Himalayan Detox Salts These go out of stock a lot because they are so good if a bit expensive. If you can afford them they are definitely worth it.

Next, Keep Hydrated.

Preferably warm or room temperature water in the winter. The digestive system doesn’t sit well when we drink ice cold water.  I like to drink Lemon juice in warm water. Citrate, a component of the citric acid in Lemon juice actually makes urine less acidic.

Nettle Tea is also a wonderful Winter drink for the Kidneys. It stimulates them and helps flush excess water and toxins from the body. This is what I drink.

Nourish yourself in the Winter

Try not to eat raw food in the Winter especially if you have weak digestion. During the cold months try not to put too much pressure on your digestive system. You can lightly steam or stir fry vegetables, this will make the food easier to digest. I try to eat seasonally and that means root vegetables in winter. Roasting root vegetables is delicious and there are numerous recipes for soups. Here is one I make regularly.

Parsnip and Split Mung Bean Soup

This soup is also very nice using different vegetables such as broccoli, peas or even courgette

1/3 of a cup or yellow split mung beans

3 cups of water

1 bay leaf

4 large parsnips peeled and chopped

1 tablespoon of ghee (or any oil you wish)

1 peeled and onion chopped

½ teaspoon of turmeric

2 teaspoons of cumin powder

2 teaspoons of vata spice

1 litre of hot vegetable stock

Salt and pepper to taste

Put the split mung beans in a small saucepan with the water and bay leaf and simmer on a low heat for approximately 15-20 minutes until the mung is soft.

Meanwhile, steam the parsnips (or other veg) until soft and keep to one side.

Heat the ghee in a large saucepan and fry the onion on a low heat until golden brown.

When the onions are ready, add the turmeric, cumin and vata spice and fry for another minute.

When everything is ready, add the steamed vegetables and mung beans to the onion and spice mix in the large saucepan. Give it a mix and add half of the vegetable stock to it.

Liquidise/blend this mixture and add the rest of the stock to it or as much as you want to achieve the consistency you would like.

Season with salt and pepper.

These are some suggestions I give my clients based on what works for me and also for other clients when they come for a healing session.

Keep warm everyone, I don’t think the winter has finished yet.

Amnanda Moksha Part 2

In my last blog I gave you an overview of what Amnanda Moksha is generally, I would now like to explore it further in relation to female sexuality.

Sexual energy infuses life and influences everything we do. It is one of the main creative life forces that drives our thoughts, feelings, behaviour and as a consequence our health and well-being.

Unfortunately, when our sexual energy is blocked or not flowing well, it affects our entire system both physically and mentally.

Amnanda Moksha helps you to clear the blocks and generate this sexual energy.

Freedom.jpg

I will give you an overview of how Amnanda Moksha has helped me in terms of my Sexuality and Sexual Energy?

The main thing that I have achieved is a sense of freedom. Both in my mind and my body.(One of my clients has referred to the feeling as a lift, a lightness).

As a result of clearing blocks through Moksha, my general energy has changed.

I feel lighter in myself. I used to have what I would call heavy days, blocked days. My head was foggy, my limbs felt heavy. I had no motivation. It wasn’t an illness, it was a state of mind and body. Reading back in my diary, I used to complain about people and life in general. These were my beliefs. I would also criticise myself a lot.  No wonder I felt heavy. This affected my physical body as well. I used to have achy muscles, painful periods, digestive problems, hormonal headaches, throat problems and the list goes on.

All of this has changed.

Of course, I get the odd achy muscle, a headache here and there but overall things are different. My attitude is different. My mind is lighter and clearer and therefore I have a different type of energy and outlook. Maybe some of you will understand where I am coming from. I had no idea what this was until doing first the 12 month Amnanda Process and then later the 6 month Amnanda Moksha.

this-artists-unusual-art-shows-the-harsh-realities-of-body-image

One particular block I had was to do with Body issues. I have had body issues for a very long time. I was always reminded that I was a chunky kid, so I have spent a lot of my life on one diet/detox or another in the hope that something would change. My self-talk / self-image about my body was always negative. That then becomes a habit and consequently part of my identity (who I think I am).  I would never wear a bikini and always made sure I was covering what I didn’t like seeing. Since doing Moksha, this has become less prevalent. I actually enjoy eating what I want, and don’t punish myself if I stray anymore by doing some strange diet. I used to use the excuse and say it was because I was curious about the diet/detox and this would be the one to change me. Honestly, I always felt deprived, but continued to punish myself.

This block is clearing all the time. Now I have the confidence and knowledge to know what is good for me and what isn’t. I have the freedom to choose what I do. I’m not on that hamster wheel of the same behaviour and not getting anywhere and feeling out of control.  I don’t care what size clothes I am. I feel freer yet feel more in control as a result.

r4zpj451trjffopk3zgx

Do I feel sexy and sexual?

That’s a good question. I have found that because I accept compliments more, then yes that has increased my self-confidence and ultimately my sexuality. In the past, every time someone would compliment me on something I wouldn’t accept it. Say someone said “you look nice today” I would answer “No I don’t”. Sound Familiar??????

This can be changed

I work on the basis that we have 3 main driving engines in our life.

  1. The importance of Acknowledgement.

I believe we interpret this as love. The opposite is criticism.

In childhood we look for acknowledgment from our parents. As teenagers we look for acknowledgment from our friends. As adults we look for acknowledgment from our partners, children, society and so on.

If we get and more importantly accept Acknowledgement then that results in

  1. Your self-esteem, charisma, acceptance of self, love

Which then leads to

  1. Strength, Potency, Motivation, Purpose.

These 3 drivers run our lives.

How many of you can say these are working well???  Are there any blocks there?

2006408_1

Blocks in our sexual energy affect the balance of our metabolic system, and importantly our hormones.

A lot of people think that our “female” hormones are active only at certain times in our life such as just before your period, puberty, pregnancy and menopause. The truth is, hormones influence the health of our bodies and minds every single day. They work like your internal internet system carrying messages from the glands where they are produced to cells in different parts of the body. These chemical messages help to “turn on” or “turn off” functions that control appetite, heart rate, stress, blood sugar, sleep cycles, sex drive etc.

I am not going to go into the biological workings of our monthly cycles. However, we all recognise the roller coaster ride of our hormonal cycles. Dramatic fluctuations of oestrogen and progesterone can cause, all sorts of challenges.

A lot of women experience imbalances of some sort. Due to many reasons. So what do we do then?

The current medical advice is to suppress and take over a woman’s natural cycle at the first sign of an imbalance, using powerful synthetic hormones, rather than educating women on the importance of diet, exercise and other therapies such as Amnanda Moksha which can then allow them to take advantage of the different strengths that they have in their control as their natural cycle progresses through life.

Amnanda Moksha activates your belief in yourself, your acknowledgement through happy hormones, positive hormones.

After all the best acknowledgement comes from you, doesn’t it?

I have seen amazing transformations from clients that have done the Moksha programme.

But the main thing that is most dominant is Freedom. Freedom to change, to explore your potential, to accept and love yourself.

Sounds good doesn’t it?

Amnanda Moksha

This is the first part of my blog introducing Amnanda Moksha therapy.

To all you wonderful women out there:

I want to ask you some direct questions:

How do you feel about your life; is it going in the wrong direction for you and you are unable to change its course?

Do you feel that despite your best intentions you always seem to make the wrong choices?

Do you have phobias?

Do you feel trapped?

Do you feel tired all the time and don’t have any motivation?

Do you feel not right, but don’t know what to do about it?

Are you on medication that stops you being you?

Do you suck at relationships?

Do you want to feel energised and liberated?

Do you want to change?

If you identify with any of these points and you want to change, then we need to talk about how to help you change and most importantly, how to remove the obstacles or blockages that stop you changing.

We need to talk about Amnanda Moksha Therapy.

visualization

So what is Amnanda Moksha Therapy?

The name comes from two Sanskrit words:

Amnanda means “Path to light/joy”.

Moksha means “Liberation”, or to be free.

The therapy was last practised in India about 100 years ago and now it has been adapted and modernised and is being practised in Europe.  It is a combination of counselling and a therapeutic massage-based treatment where you and I work together to remove the blocks in your life.

When we talk about blocks, we are talking about the things that stop you doing what you want to do.  These fears are normally deep-rooted sub conscious thought patterns. For example, it could be a fear of speaking in public or a fear of flying.

The block creates a physical hormonal response in our body. I’m sure everyone has experienced the sweaty palms and adrenalin rush of a really stressful situation. But blocks, and the real-life physical response that follows, can occur in our imagination.

For example, when you dream there is a tiger hiding under the bed, your brain doesn’t distinguish between fact or fiction, it sends the fight or flight hormones rushing through your body regardless. Nightmares only exist in the mind, but we wake up sweating, scared and with a rapid heartbeat: this is our body’s hormonal response.

And everyone is unique, we could all go through the same experience, but each of us will have our own response system to the events, either real or imagined.

Additionally, a lot of us feel the pressure of our families or peers to behave or act in a certain way.  Even if that doesn’t feel right, we find ourselves conforming to Society, suppressing the real self, and stifling our potential because every time we put our head above the parapet those stress hormones kick in and drag us back.

images

A little bit of stress now and then isn’t a bad thing, in fact it’s perfectly natural and a spurt of adrenaline in a dangerous situation could save your life.  However, when the release of stress hormones becomes the normal way of living or even when you choose to avoid situations because of your physical reaction to stress then this is not healthy or happy behaviour.

Living with a long-term imbalance of stress producing hormones can lead to physical symptoms such as digestive issues, migraines, obesity, high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, and joint or muscle pain which then might lead to much more complex and serious conditions all because our bodies are out of balance through being stressed.

What the Amnanda Moksha programme does is to help you rebalance this hormonal system and change your interpretation of your life experiences. We work together to strengthen your conscious mind so that you have the freedom to make decisions towards your contentment and happiness in a stress-free way. Your decisions will come from you, not your subconscious identity or from society. We work to help you rebalance your metabolism so that stress releasing hormones are reduced and are replaced by happy healthy hormones that we all have the ability to produce.

images

How does Amnanda Moksha effect our metabolism and hormonal response?

Whenever you touch someone, or they touch you, there is going to be a metabolic response and hormones are released.  Happy hormones or not so happy ones will be released depending on the situation. This also applies to every word we say to each other. Our bodies are constantly responding on a metabolic level.

For example, just think about the last argument you had with someone, how did that make you feel physically.  Maybe that physical feeling has happened before, and you don’t like it, so you suppress your feelings and avoid conflict to avoid the physical feelings that follow. Guilt for example, produces stress hormones and affects us physically; and our world is full of guilt.

In Amnanda Moksha Therapy we use a special touch treatment given with unconditional love.  By activating the happy hormones like oxytocin (the bonding hormone which makes us feel comforted during the treatment), in connection with your neuronal system (brain) we work on rebalancing and reprogramming your hormonal response so that old blockages are replaced with new feelings and reactions.

Over the treatment period of 6 months (1 session per month) and then beyond into the future, your thought patterns will start to change and rebalancing will begin. What was stressful can now be handled differently.

Just as important as the loving touch therapy is the work we will do together in the consultation part of the treatment. We will identify the blockages and their causes that are stopping you moving forward: the stress inducers, the things getting in the way of your healthy happy life. Together we will find the solutions and empower and guide you to have the energy, strength and knowledge to fix yourself.

Thank you for your time reading this.

Day 6 of Autumn cleanse

Hello and welcome to Day 6 of my Autumn Cleanse.

Last night I was feeling great and slept really well.

This morning I stepped on the scales and was happy with the results – 5lbs loss.

I was thinking last night that today would be my final day of the juice cleanse.

I came up with this conclusion not because I caved in and failed but because I was very happy with my achievements which were to feel lighter and brighter and I felt like eating again.

In the past I would have never have stopped. I would be clinging on with my fingernails even if I felt miserable. “I can’t show that I’m a failure” That was my belief system.

Well that was then and this is now. Now I am much more flexible and relaxed about life in general. Yes, I had fun juicing and smoothie-ing and souping and I had a good old clear out. But I was ready to finish. That’s not to say I won’t be having the odd juice and smoothie here and there, I enjoy them very much. But I don’t like dogma, I like my freedom of choice

choice

I was doing a course today so I took my massive flask of juice which I did drink a lot of.

IMG_1486

But then our lovely hostess put on a fantastic spread for lunch and I thought OK now is the time.

I have had a juice for dinner though

Overall, I have enjoyed my last few days and have felt very good.

Like I said before I am not new to detoxes and cleanses and enjoy trying out new things.

I hope you have enjoyed coming along with me on my journey and maybe tried some of the juice recipes or soups.

Until my next blog

See you soon.

Day 5 of Autumn Cleanse

Reenergise-890x350

Today I woke up very energised. Actually, my energy has been good overall. It makes me think that I wasn’t as bad as I thought I was. I did think that because of my summer indulgences I would be struggling, but hey I’m not going to complain.

One thing I have noticed, and I know this, but it is good to be reminded is how much I need to eat in comparison to how much I want to eat!!!!! As the saying goes “my eyes have always been bigger than my stomach”. I’m not sure what that is? Sometimes boredom, a way of procrastinating (by eating), comfort? Probably all of the above. I’ve had a strange relationship with food over the years.

When I was a singer I had the added bonus of being paranoid about what I ate and when.

23826043-Cartoon-boy-eating-spaghetti-Stock-Vector

What I try to do now is enjoy what I consume. If I want a desert for dinner, then I have it and enjoy it. I think the biggest problem a lot of us have is the negative emotions associated with eating, especially guilt.

Negative emotions hinder your digestion. Your metabolism is greatly influenced by your mind and vice versa. When you enjoy your food as you’re eating it, your hypothalamus (part of the brain that controls many bodily functions and is responsible for motivational behaviour) releases pleasure signals that stimulate your digestion. If you feel bad about what you are eating, the opposite will happen,  slow digestion which causes your body to store more calories as fat rather than burning them. It’s also important to note that all stressors can have this effect on your metabolism, not just guilt. I try not to label food as good or bad, I want my body to love food, not to see it as a source of shame. However, I do struggle sometimes when I see the scales moving up instead of down, but then I just say “get a grip”. I’m sure plenty of you know where I’m coming from.

Anyhow, on to my day

7.30am

Lemon, ginger and warm water

9am

Juice number 1

Apple, cucumber, carrot, chard, celery, broccoli, beetroot, lemon and ginger

I felt like something more savory this morning

IMG_1018

11.30am

Juice number 2

Apple, spinach, cucumber and celery

1.30pm

Nakd Bar

6.30pm

Chard and sweet potato soup

soup2-1024x678

  • 1 red onion
  • 1 clove of garlic crushed
  • 1 stick of celery
  • 1 sweet potato
  • 1 white potato
  • chard leaves (I only use chard because I have so much growing in my garden – you can use spinach if you like)
  • Hand full of Rocket
  • Chilli flakes of paprika
  • 500ml vegetable stock

In a large pan, heat the oil, red onion, garlic, celery and chilli flakes until soft.

Add the peeled and chopped sweet potato and white potato, chard and vegetable stock.

Bring to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes before serving.

If you prefer a smoother soup, pour into a blender and blitz until desired consistency is achieved.

I worked at home today again with clients and felt great.

I’ve been getting compliments about my skin which means the detox is working nicely.

Looking forward to tomorrow

See you then

Day 4 of Autumn Cleanse

I worked at the retreat again today so I was up early. It was very easy to get out of bed, I wasn’t tired at all.

7am

Lemon, ginger and warm water

8am

Juice number 1

Apple, pineapple, cucumber, lime and avocado

(Same as before)

fullsizeoutput_374

Pineapple contains vitamin A and potassium, as well as an enzyme called papain which helps digestion. It is also high in vitamin C, which is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants are necessary to fight the free radicals associated with some cancers.

11.30am

Juice number 2

Apple, chard, cucumber and celery

+ a wheatgrass shot

IMG_1480

Green juice is rich in chlorophyll, which gives greens their colour. Chlorophyll helps your body detoxify.  Chlorophyll also helps oxygen transport in your body and is a top nutrient for balancing your body’s pH by helping to reduce acidity

2pm

Nakd bar

5.30pm

Juice number 3

fullsizeoutput_375

Apple, pineapple, avocado, spinach, cucumber, lime and celery

Tonights soup is Roasted Tomato

1 kg fresh tomatoes

small bunch of fresh basil

3 unpeeled cloves of garlic

4 tablespoons extra virgin olive

1 large potato

2 rounded teaspoons tomato purée

1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

salt and pepper

IMG_1483

Skin the tomatoes

Pre heat the oven to gas 5 or 190C

  •  slice each tomato in half and arrange the halves on the baking tray
  • Place the garlic cloves on the tray as well, leaving their skins on. season with salt and pepper and drizzle with olive oil. Rip some basil over the top of everything.
  • Put into the oven and roast for 1 hour or until the edges of the tomatoes are slightly blackened.
  • About 20 minutes before the end of the roasting time, peel and chop the potato, place it in a saucepan with some salt and 500ml of boiling water. Add the tomato purée then simmer for about 20 minutes.
  • When the tomatoes are ready, remove them from the oven.
  • Put the tomatoes and all their juices into a food processor, squeeze the pulp from the garlic in with the tomatoes and discard the skins.
  • Then add the contents of the potato saucepan and whiz everything to a thick purée, not too smooth.
  • You can slowly re-heat it.

The main thing I felt today was a flatter stomach.

Even though I have only lost 3lbs.

I feel less puffy in my tissues. Less congestion.

Doing a soup/juice cleanse rests the digestive system. The addition of soup provides a good amount of fibre, and fibre supports detoxification. Soup also relies primarily on vegetables rather then fruit so it is low on the glycemic scale.

Hope you had a good day

See you tomorrow.

Day 3 of Autumn Cleanse

Last night I slept really well.

In fact I stayed in bed ½ an hour longer than normal but that was OK as today I was working from home.

7.30am

Lemon, ginger and warm water

After my shower, I did have an episode where my muscles felt a bit heavy and weak. I thought “OH NO”, not day 3 issues?

I say this because usually whenever I do a detox or cleanse, Day 3 is when I feel my worse. However, that passed quickly and I got on with my morning.

9am

Juice number 1

Carrots, apples, ½ a lemon (unwaxed), piece of ginger

IMG_1476

This juice is rich in Vitamin C.

Vitamin C keeps tissues strong and healthy.

The citric acid and the ginger eliminates toxins from the body and aids digestion.

Ginger is also a natural antibiotic and helps with congestion.

12pm

Juice number 2

Lime, apples, pineapple, cucumber, avocado + a shot of wheatgrass (same as day 1 and 2).

3pm

Nakd Bar

Today there have been no tummy rumblings.

By the way, my hunger is getting less, I didn’t finish my Green Soup last night.

This always shocks and worries people who haven’t done a cleanse before. But as I said before, a lot of people are overfed but undernourished. Once your system gets used to “Raw” “Live” nutrients it begins to be fed on a cellular level. Less is more.

4pm

Juice number 3

Pineapple, apples, ¼ banana, almond milk

IMG_1479

This smoojie is a little bit different. I used almond milk but you could use Yoghurt if you wanted.

It’s a bit like a Pina Colada Mocktail

Bananas provide slow release energy as well as being rich in potassium. A lot of clients I see are low in potassium. We need it to promote muscle and nerve function as well as controlling blood pressure.

Tonight I made Chunky Vegetable Soup

IMG_1477

1 Parsnip, peeled and chopped

2 sticks of celery sliced

2 Carrots, peeled and chopped

Sweet Potato, peeled and chopped

½ Swede, peeled and chopped

1 onion, chopped

1 Leek, sliced

2 Courgettes, sliced

1 litre Vegetable stock

1 sprig of thyme

Fry the onion and Leeks in some ghee until soft

Add the rest of the chopped vegetables and fry for a bit

Add the vegetable stock and thyme

Simmer until the vegetables are cooked

Season with salt and pepper.

Use a potato masher to mash the soup a little. (You still want some chunks in it).

I had a full day of massage clients today and my energy was good all day.

Tonight, I don’t feel very tired which is good.

I’m glad I am having soups in the evening. The weather has turned cold here so the soup warms my body temperature which aids digestion.

If you are considering a cleanse like this especially at this time of the year then you really need to consider how good your digestion is.

If it is weak (bloating, constipation, gas, acid reflux etc) maybe you could have 1 or 2 juices/smoothies and more soup. You really need to experiment and see what works for you. All of the above digestive issues should not happen if your system is working well. (maybe occasionally) If you do start this cleanse and you experience any of the above then it may not be for you.

See you tomorrow
